‘The Serene Disciple’

.
When in the soul of the serene disciple
With no more Fathers to imitate
Poverty is a success,
It is a small thing to say the roof is gone:
He has not even a house.

Stars, as well as friends,
Are angry with the noble ruin.
Saints depart in several directions.

Be still:
There is no longer any need of comment.
It was a lucky wind
That blew away his halo with his cares,
A lucky sea that drowned his reputation.

Here you will find
Neither a proverb nor a memorandum.
There are no ways,
No methods to admire
Where poverty is no achievement.
His God lives in his emptiness like an affliction.

What choice remains?
Well, to be ordinary is not a choice:
It is the usual freedom
Of men without visions.

“A woman’s highest calling is to lead a man to his Soul, so as to unite him with his source; her lowest calling is to seduce, separating man from his Soul and leave him wandering aimlessly. A man’s highest calling is to protect woman, so she is free to walk the earth unharmed. Man’s lowest calling is to ambush and force his way into the life of a woman.” ~ Native American Cherokee Proverb

Regular readers of my personal Blog will know I’m a homeless hitchhiker, an itinerant who travels the road, exchanging my camera skills for food, water and a place to pitch my tent. The following true story has two parts; the first of Love, and Kindness — contrasted with the second on our selfish Souls.

.
Howrah Station, Calcutta:

I’m walking the streets of Kolkata. Barefoot and penniless, just the clothes on my back, carrying a small blanket which I sleep on each night. All that I owned has been stolen or lost. An older Muslim gentleman, sitting on the footpath, calls me over. I hunker down beside him, our backs against a wall. “Welcome to my home,” he says.

Home is a sheet of plastic on a bamboo roofing-frame that’s attached to the wall as an awning. A hole in the wall provides some dim cavity where his wife and children sit.

I spend three days with the man. We sit on the footpath drinking sweet chai and he tells me about the neighbourhood. A steady stream of people come and go, all eager to meet this visitor from a foreign shore. They bring small gifts of food and drink. Occasionally, a chillum’s passed around. At night, I lay out my blanket on the footpath, sleeping under the plastic sheet.

Time comes to leave and the man uses a small knife to cut his plastic sheet in half. With tears in his eyes, he gives it into my possession. “Travel well, my friend,” he says.

I will always remember this man. He had nothing — yet he gave me half his home.

Under the Espionage Act 1917  it is an offence . . .

To convey information with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the armed forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies — punishable by death or by imprisonment for not more than 30 years or both.

And . . .

To convey false reports or false statements with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies when the United States is at war, to cause or attempt to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or to wilfully obstruct the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States — punishable by a maximum fine of $10,000 or by imprisonment for not more than 20 years or both.

.

I have come to hold the view that the US Government is the enemy of all humanity and so, henceforth, I feel duty bound . . .

To convey information with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the armed forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies.

And . . .

To interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies when the United States is at war, to cause or attempt to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or to wilfully obstruct the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States.

Love not Hate

One of my favourite images — it reminds me of Rachel Corrie
who, ten years ago today, was killed by the Israeli military.

Armed only with her bright red fluro jacket and a big heart,
Rachel was attempting to prevent Israel’s destruction of
Palestinian homes in the Occupied Territory.

The Israelis, in a move that typifies their brutal war on humanity,
simply crushed her body beneath the tracks of their bulldozers.

Lest we forget, a selection of articles on my Wall at Google-Plus:

I decided to sort out my confusion with the difference in meaning of Sympathy and Empathy. So, some definitions from a free on-line dictionary:

• Sympathy n. [sĭmp(ə)-thē] — a mutual understanding or affection arising from an affinity or relationship with another person.

• Empathy n. [ĕmp(ə)-thē] — the power of understanding, or identification with, and imaginatively entering into other people’s situations, feelings, and motives.

And, a selection of references on Empathy that I’ve posted to my Wall at Google-Plus:

‘Telling our Stories’

“Keep telling your story. All must be heard.”  ~ Anonymous

.
In 2009, a woman wrote asking my help to write her story which she intended leaving as a legacy for her granddaughter from who she’d become estranged following a family feud. I hitchhiked a week to reach her home, camped on the lawn, and, for several more days, sat on her porch drinking tea while listening as she answered my questions.

The project was ambitious — a broad, sweeping canvas comprised of all events that shaped and formed her life. Photographs; poetry; favourite recipes, prayers and quotes; family-stories handed down; birthdays and anniversaries. There were the celebrations; the triumphs and the failures, the tears and the laughter . . . a rich and human account.

I left her with a simple plan:

(1) Build a personal Blog using WordPress. Access to the Blog can be public, private, password restricted or limited to only certain people, as one wishes.

(2) To provide structure, run the Blog for a 12-month period (or, 365 days) with the beginning and end dates to suit oneself (here’s an example of this structure at work).

(3) Using a yearly planner, mark out all the birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates to be recorded, and schedule a post to be published on each of those days. This might also include days for such things as letters and photographs, or any event which can be dated.

(4) Remaining days can be used for anything and everything one might wish to write or post. Thoughts; dreams; hopes and wishes; one’s view of the world, much like a diary.

Had my grandmother left me such a gift  . . . it would be a priceless treasure.

“An eye for an eye will leave everyone blind . . .”

Louis Fischer  ~

.
Forgiveness is a powerful method of healing — although, for some of us, forgiveness is not yet an option because we are attached to our suffering and pain. It’s as though our grievance identifies us, or tells us who we are as a person, and the desire for revenge remains a powerful obsession.

Some of us become consumed by this obsession; it poisons us, and destroys our lives.

Forgiveness releases us from that dark and desolate hell. When we open our hearts, the Light comes in . . . it’s a gift to ourselves.
