‘The Serene Disciple’

.
When in the soul of the serene disciple
With no more Fathers to imitate
Poverty is a success,
It is a small thing to say the roof is gone:
He has not even a house.

Stars, as well as friends,
Are angry with the noble ruin.
Saints depart in several directions.

Be still:
There is no longer any need of comment.
It was a lucky wind
That blew away his halo with his cares,
A lucky sea that drowned his reputation.

Here you will find
Neither a proverb nor a memorandum.
There are no ways,
No methods to admire
Where poverty is no achievement.
His God lives in his emptiness like an affliction.

What choice remains?
Well, to be ordinary is not a choice:
It is the usual freedom
Of men without visions.

Today is International al-Qud Day — which, by tradition, is the last Friday of Ramadan. The Day of al-Quds, or Jerusalem Day, is not a religious occasion but rather a human rights event open to all people, both Muslims and non-Muslims alike, an opportunity to stand with the Palestinian people in their resistance of Israel’s cruel, brutal and illegal occupation of their Land.

When one spends one’s entire adult life with one’s snout in the public trough, one will look like one Paula Bennett, pictured here, having consumed more than is necessary for one. Paula lives a life of privilege. More than $250,000 per annum from a Government salary, plus tens of thousands more in related perks, this is the person responsible for leading the Government’s charge against our least privileged — the sick, the poor, the homeless.

Paula’s always had it good. State funded education, State funded benefit as a solo-mum, and State funded housing. Yes, Paula Bennett’s had it all . . .

Today, Paula pulled up the ladder behind her — and here’s a New Zealand Herald report:

On freedom (4)

“A trip calls for a man who has not yet been caged, who has not yet been fucked by the big Fear that makes all society go. Unfortunately, most men overestimate their worthiness as basic and free individuals, and it is the mistake of the hippie generation not to trust anybody over 30. 30 doesn’t mean a damn thing. Most beings are captured and trained, totally, by the age of 7 or 8. Many of the young LOOK free but this is only a chemical thing of body and energy and not a realistic thing of spirit. I have met free men in the strangest of places and at ALL ages – as janitors, car thieves, car washers, and some free women too – mostly as nurses or waitresses, and at ALL ages. The free soul is rare, but you know it when you see it – basically because you feel good, very good, when you are near or with them.”

Regular readers of my personal Blog will know I’m a homeless hitchhiker, an itinerant who travels the road, exchanging my camera skills for food, water and a place to pitch my tent. The following true story has two parts; the first of Love, and Kindness — contrasted with the second on our selfish Souls.

.
Howrah Station, Calcutta:

I’m walking the streets of Kolkata. Barefoot and penniless, just the clothes on my back, carrying a small blanket which I sleep on each night. All that I owned has been stolen or lost. An older Muslim gentleman, sitting on the footpath, calls me over. I hunker down beside him, our backs against a wall. “Welcome to my home,” he says.

Home is a sheet of plastic on a bamboo roofing-frame that’s attached to the wall as an awning. A hole in the wall provides some dim cavity where his wife and children sit.

I spend three days with the man. We sit on the footpath drinking sweet chai and he tells me about the neighbourhood. A steady stream of people come and go, all eager to meet this visitor from a foreign shore. They bring small gifts of food and drink. Occasionally, a chillum’s passed around. At night, I lay out my blanket on the footpath, sleeping under the plastic sheet.

Time comes to leave and the man uses a small knife to cut his plastic sheet in half. With tears in his eyes, he gives it into my possession. “Travel well, my friend,” he says.

I will always remember this man. He had nothing — yet he gave me half his home.

Under the Espionage Act 1917  it is an offence . . .

To convey information with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the armed forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies — punishable by death or by imprisonment for not more than 30 years or both.

And . . .

To convey false reports or false statements with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies when the United States is at war, to cause or attempt to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or to wilfully obstruct the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States — punishable by a maximum fine of $10,000 or by imprisonment for not more than 20 years or both.

.

I have come to hold the view that the US Government is the enemy of all humanity and so, henceforth, I feel duty bound . . .

To convey information with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the armed forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies.

And . . .

To interfere with the operation or success of the military or naval forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies when the United States is at war, to cause or attempt to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, refusal of duty, in the military or naval forces of the United States, or to wilfully obstruct the recruiting or enlistment service of the United States.

So help me, God.

On trust:

“Trust yourself, you will start to trust others.”

Santosh Kalwar  ~

.
Most of us have felt betrayed. We know its pain and anguish. Stumbling on, looking for a safe place, fearful and shut off from trust, determined that no one will hurt us again.

It’s worse for those of us who, like myself, have betrayed our fellow beings for we’ve learnt a terrible truth — anyone is capable of betrayal.  I know this, because, as an undercover agent, success depended on me gaining the trust of my targets, knowing all the while that, come the end of day, I would betray them.

And so it was I lost all trust in myself . . . locked inside what Graham Greene described as the most terrible cell of all, oneself. And it got worse: if I can’t trust me, how could I ever trust you, went my reasoning.

Cold and lonely, yet feeling safe.

It was a sad exchange — safety is a desolate place.

Then, in one of life’s little ironies, which I write about here, the pain of my situation brought me to open my heart, and with that came Love. It gifted me an understanding and a forgiveness for my betrayal — and, more importantly, an empathy with others; an acceptance of the human condition.

I trust myself again . . .

.
Our ‘Rule of Law’ is a concept born from the Magna Carta — a Charter intended to protect us from the excesses of the Crown. Over time, the great Articles contained in that Charter have been whittled away to the point where, now, in our modern, Alice-in-Wonderland and upside-down world, Governments use the Rule of Law to control and subjugate us. In New Zealand statutes, for example, all that remains of the original Charter is Article 29 which I’ve outlined in the quote above. Here’s the full text:

“NO freeman shall be taken or imprisoned, or be disseised of his freehold, or liberties, or free customs, or be outlawed, or exiled, or any other wise destroyed;  nor will we not pass upon him, nor condemn him, but by lawful judgement of his peers, or by the law of the land.  We will sell to no man, we will not deny or defer to any man either justice or right.”
