Protecting their own . . .

Deputy Commissioner Mike Bush from New Zealand Police delivered a glowing eulogy at the funeral of former Detective Inspector Bruce Hutton last week. The Commissioner described Bruce Hutton as having . . . “integrity beyond reproach”.

Bruce Hutton was officer in charge of the Crewe homicide inquiry. Inspector Hutton and his offsider, Detective Sergeant Len Johnston, planted evidence at the murder scene to frame an innocent man and send him to jail for 10 years. A Royal Commission would later describe their actions as being . . . “an unspeakable outrage”.

Bruce Hutton and Len Johnston were never charged for their criminal offending and the Zealand Police Department continues to protect its own.
