Sympathy vis-à-vis Empathy

I decided to sort out my confusion with the difference in meaning of Sympathy and Empathy. So, some definitions from a free on-line dictionary:
• Sympathy n. [sĭm‘p(ə)-thē] — a mutual understanding or affection arising from an affinity or relationship with another person.
• Empathy n. [ĕm‘p(ə)-thē] — the power of understanding, or identification with, and imaginatively entering into other people’s situations, feelings, and motives.
